Content Blindness

When exposed to similar or identical content, people will subconsciously pay less and less attention to it.

How to utilise this in your designs

You could try routinely changing cover art and title fonts, so titles people have scrolled past many times feel new again, rather than fading into content blindness.

Two dark-themed "My List" sections show animated "The Creature Cases" cards; an orange arrow highlights card updates. Below are empty "Silly" and "Action Series" rows.

Try showing thumbnails in black and white once they've been read, so familiar items recede and unread content stands out, working with content blindness.

Dark-themed article list with white text cards; arrows point to two cards with player images and checked circles: "No Premier League clubs charged with PSR breaches" and "Arsenal pursuing deal to sign Zubimendi."

You could periodically offer to show 'something different' in a feed, to break the content blindness that builds when people see the same kinds of videos.

YouTube dark mode UI with video thumbnails; a dark pop-up says "Looking for something different? Get video recommendations beyond what you usually watch" with a "New to you" button.

Try embedding realistic questions based on the user's domain in onboarding slides, so each slide feels specific rather than generic content that triggers content blindness.

Dark mode UI shows AI Q&A card with query "What types of resources does Builtformars provide for UX design?" highlighted by an orange underline and arrow.

You could experiment with promoting a new feature inside the feed with clickable examples, rather than in promo spaces people are habitually blind to.

Possible impacts

Varying repeated content could help keep users' attention for longer, as items that look identical or duplicated may be ignored due to content blindness.

Asking many similar questions could cause a decrease in input quality, as content blindness may lead users to miss the nuances, especially in onboarding or user research.
