Leading with your prices

Wise are so transparent with their prices, that they'll link directly to a fee calculator on their splash page (i.e., before you've made any commitment to use the app).

Helping you price this

Vinted helps you set an appropriate price for your item by automatically pulling up listings of the same (or similar) items.

Rounding up prices

To reduce complexity, prices on Fiverr are rounded up on the browse pages.

Rounding up prices

More context:

This should make deciding slightly easier, and browsing less overwhelming.

i.e., seeing "from £105" is less distracting than everything being "from £105.34 to £109.93".

Helping hosts set pricing

To reduce the friction of hosts calculating a "fair" listing price, Airbnb will suggest a price based on similar bookings, including an interactive map of local prices.

Pricing per meal

HelloFresh will frame the cost of their mealkits 'per serving' in the checkout.

Pricing per meal

More context:

The inherent problem for HelloFresh, is that the ingredient cost for home-cooked food is difficult to price. They're subject to the Recency Bias of the last few food shops.

This framing allows the customer to try and reverse benchmark the cost of homecooked meals.

i.e., can you produce a tasty home cooked meal for £1.93 per serving?

It feels like better value now, right?

FAQs

Is it worth showing prices before users sign up?

Early pricing removes the worry of hidden costs, which matters most in products where fees are the main concern. For example, Wise links to a fee calculator from its splash page, comparing its rates with Western Union and Monzo before you've committed to anything.

How does the unit of a price change how people judge it?

A price is easier to judge when it's expressed in a unit people already have a benchmark for. HelloFresh shows cost per serving at checkout, so customers can ask whether they could cook a tasty meal for £1.93. Airbnb switches to monthly pricing for stays over a month, because a nightly figure is hard to add up across 90 days.

Should you round prices on browse pages?

Rounded prices cut visual noise when people are scanning lots of options, e.g., "from £105" rather than "from £105.34". Fiverr rounds up prices on browse pages, then uses a tooltip to explain that the exact price appears at checkout, so the rounding stays transparent.

How can marketplaces help sellers pick a fair price?

Comparable data at the pricing step turns a guess into a decision, and proves that similar items actually sell. For instance, Vinted pulls up similar sold items, and Airbnb suggests a price with an interactive map of local listings. Etsy takes a different route, with an earnings calculator that shows pricing tips if estimated earnings drop below zero.

How do you stop shoppers leaving to compare prices elsewhere?

The trick is spotting the moment someone signals they're about to shop around, then answering their question on the page. This is what AO does: hovering over a product name to copy it triggers a price comparison with other retailers.
